FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
World number 10 Felix Auger-Aliassime totally dominated the 10th seed Jannik Sinner on Thursday in one of his most complete performances on clay to date. The 21-year-old has conceded just six games so far after also dismissing Cristian Garin in the second round with the high-altitude conditions in Madrid clearly aiding the Canadian’s powerful groundstrokes. Auger-Aliassime finally won his first ATP title at the ninth time of asking by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Rotterdam Open back in February but his greatest achievement to date remains reaching the semi-finals of the US Open last season.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
World number three Alexander Zverev was in control against Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday before the Italian retired early in the second set for an altogether more assured display than his three-set opener against Marin Cilic. Zverev is a two-time and defending champion at the Madrid Open after defeating Matteo Berrettini in the final last season, with a semi-final victory over Rafael Nadal last season particularly impressive. The German enjoyed his best year on tour in 2022 with six titles won including two Masters titles, the ATP Finals and a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Alexander Zverev will have some real stock in this burgeoning rivalry with Felix Auger-Aliassime after the Canadian dumped him out of Wimbledon last season in five sets and beat him again this January in the ATP Cup. Zverev still leads this head-to-head record 4-2 but Auger-Aliassime has really grown into this particularly tussle to win two of the last three and each of that last three have gone the distance. Zverev looked much better against Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday but Auger-Aliassime has been dominating proceedings so far and if there is to be an upset in the quarter-finals this match looks the likeliest for it. Back the Canadian to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
