THE PREDICTION

Botic van de Zandschulp set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 26th to match his age this week after an impressive run at Queen’s was foiled by eventual champion Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals. The Dutchman has vastly improved over the last 12 months from a full-time challenger to a seed at back-to-back majors. His best run to date was a stunning quarter-final exit at last season’s US Open where he was the only man to take a set from eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.

Former world number 12 Feliciano Lopez saw his record of consecutive Grand Slam appearances snapped at 79 after failing to qualify for Roland-Garros last month but the well-loved veteran will play in his 20th Wimbledon this weekend having not missed any since his debut in 2002. A two-time quarter-finalist here, Lopez memorably did the double at Queen’s in 2019 to win the latest of his seven ATP titles, four of which have come on grass. 40-year-old Lopez is always a threat and well capable of taking at least a set here but Van de Zandschulp will be confident in his ability to stay present and eventually win through.
