THE PREDICTION
World number two Daniil Medvedev has taken some time away from the tour to recharge his batteries after a stunning run to the Australian Open final was ended in five sets by Rafael Nadal. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Mexican Open, again losing to Nadal, and more recently the quarter-finals of the Miami Open before taking a month and a half off and he lost his first game back in straight sets to Richard Gasquet on Tuesday at the Geneva Open. Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the US Open last season and he briefly went top of the pile earlier this season, becoming the first player to do so outside of the top four for almost two decades, but he is far from his best on clay.
World number 98 Facundo Bagnis started 2022 off in some great form but the Argentine has struggled on tour for a few months now. The 32-year-old is a solid clay-courter capable of frustrating Medvedev over three sets and the possibility of fourth set is strong enough to take the Russian as an outright winner here. Medvedev may well drop the first set before rallying after a long break.
