Although Tomas Machac has struggled to reach the latter stages of tournaments, aside from the Geneva Open back in May where he finished runner-up to Casper Ruud, 23-year-old has proven reliable when it comes to avoiding early first round exits. It doesn’t take long for Machac to adapt to the rigours and pressures of a grand slam tournament and his powerful game suits the US Open surface.

Fabio Fognini is a wily opponent and willing to tough it out against Machac no doubt. But the relentless nature of Machac on the hard court is likely to prove very hard for Fognini to counter. If Machac takes the first set, it’s unlikely that Fognini will be able to come back and backing the former to triumph has to be favoured.
