World number 52 Fabio Fognini lost to Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Geneva Open this week and he faces another hard-hitting Aussie here in Alexei Popyrin. The 34-year-old former world number nine has struggled to put in successive strong performances this season, with his best run coming at the Rio Open where he lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. World number 103 Popyrin stepped back into the Challengers in recent weeks to try and regain some momentum and he won in Bordeaux last week for some solid clay form coming into Roland-Garros. The 22-year-old won his first ATP title at last season’s Singapore Open but he has regressed some what since and Fognini remains the fairly backable favourite on this surface, on this stage. The Italian beat Popyrin in their only previous meeting at the 2019 Basel Open and taking him to edge this outright seems reasonable enough.
