THE PREDICTION
World number 68 Alize Cornet has intimated that this season will be her last on the WTA tour and the 33-year-old will be keen to show up at Indian Wells after losing her first four matches of 2023. The Frenchwoman takes a six-match losing streak into the first round after finishing runner-up to Elise Mertens at the Jasmin Open last October but she enjoyed one of her best seasons in 2022, most notably ending Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak at Wimbledon, and she is well capable of a deep run with the right draw. This could be that draw against world number 427 Evgeniya Rodina, who in contrast to Cornet is currently embarking on her comeback from retirement but is similarly seeking her first win since the Jasmin Open. The former world number 67 is a dangerous outlier for Cornet to have to navigate past but it would be a surprise to see an upset here. Back Cornet to win, particularly as Rodina comes in cold with her last match in Melbourne back in January.
