THE PREDICTION
This should be a lights-out first encounter between Emma Raducanu and Bianca Andreescu with some fascinating similarities between the two. Raducanu famously won the US Open last September, becoming the first qualifier to do so in the Open Era, at 18 years old with barely a quarter of a full WTA season behind her and she enters the Rome Masters as the 10th seed still yet to complete a full 12 months on tour. 21-year-old Andreescu started her WTA tour career at a much younger age but her breakthrough season in 2019 also culminated in winning the US Open with a stunning victory over Serena Williams in the final at just 19 years old. Andreescu beat Alison Riske and Danielle Collins at the Madrid Open before defeat to eventual finalist Jessica Pegula whist Raducanu also fell at the round of 16 stage with a back issue seeing her just miss out in three sets to Anhelina Kalinina. Both players’ form and fitness levels are currently very unpredictable and perhaps taking this to need a decider is a suitable way to avoid picking a winner. Taking either player to win at least a set seems about as reasonable as the other here with Raducanu possessing the game to redirect Andreescu’s power on clay possibly swinging it in favour of the Brit. The winner of this blockbuster could well face Naomi Osaka in the second round.
