EMMA RADUCANU
World number 11 Emma Raducanu put in her best performance since her US Open campaign with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Marta Kostyuk on Sunday. The 19-year-old is yet to drop a set in Madrid and she reached the quarter-finals at the Stuttgart Open last time out before a creditable defeat to Iga Swiatek for some form on clay that is hugely encouraging for her future. Raducanu is through to the round of 16 as a Masters tournament for a first time here after less than a year on the WTA tour.
ANHELINA KALININA
World number 37 Anhelina Kalinina thrashed an out-of-sorts Garbine Muguruza for just three conceded games on Sunday, handing the Spaniard a bagel in the second set. The 25-year-old also stunned Sloane Stephens in the first round to maintain some excellent form in 2022, with a run to the quarter-finals at the Charleston Open last month including a victory over Elena Rybakina. Kalinina is one of only a few players on tour to have taken a set from Iga Swiatek over the last few months.
THE PREDICTION
This first meeting between Emma Raducanu and Anhelina Kalinina will be a fascinating watch but picking a winner looks really tough. World number 11 Raducanu produced the kind of tennis that saw her stun the field in New York last September to win the US Open as she swatted aside Marta Kostyuk, who had her well beaten last season at the Cluj-Napoca Open. Kalinina can break her career-high WTA world ranking of 36th with one more win in Madrid with some excellent recent results on the clay making her the slight favourite here. However, if Raducanu plays like she did against Kostyuk there are very few players on tour that could cope. Three sets seems likely here and taking the Brit to win at least one could be the sensible move even if she loses.
