THE LOWDOWN

Emma Raducanu became the first qualifier in history to win the US Open last season in one of the most remarkable sporting achievements in living memory. The teenager had previously announced herself to the world stage at Wimbledon, where she reached the round of 16 as an unheard of wildcard in only her second tour-level tournament, but she did not drop a set over 10 matches from qualifying through to a blistering final against fellow youngster Leylah Fernandez to become one of the most famous global athletes overnight.

The current world number 11 stands to lose the majority of her ranking points next Monday to drop to around world number 80 after what has been in large parts a difficult and frustrating first full season on tour, but back-to-back comprehensive victories over former world number ones Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka last week in Cincinnati harked back to her New York form for more than a spot of encouragement.

THE PREDICTION

World number 37 Alize Cornet started this season by finally breaking her duck, reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for a first time with a huge victory over Simona Halep at the Australian Open. The 32-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Cleveland Championships this week before a three-set defeat to Aliaksandra Sasnovich and she has been in excellent form all season long. It is so hard to predict what version of Emma Raducanu will take to court late on Tuesday but she will have the support of whole of Louis Armstrong Stadium behind her and that should be enough to see her win at least a set here. Cornet has beaten some top players this season, including Iga Swiatek, but often in three sets.
