23-year-old J.J. Wolf set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 84th this week after reaching the quarter-finals of the Citi Open, beating the likes of Denis Shapovalov and Holger Rune before losing to world number eight Andrey Rublev. The American has spent most of the season on the Challenger circuit but impressed when playing on the tour and he will receive a hero’s welcome at the Cincinnati Open as a city native and backable underdog in this opener. World number 44 Emil Ruusuvuori has been improving steadily this season and it took three sets for eventual finalist Hubert Hurkacz to oust him from the Canada Masters this week. The 23-year-old beat Hurkacz the week before in Washington and a further top 20 win over Diego Schwartzman at the Hamburg Open before that suggests he is the favourite here despite the crowd’s wishes. Still, Wolf is likely to perform above and beyond at home and taking the American to snatch at least a set seems a reasonable risk in this first meeting between the two.
