THE LOWDOWN

ELISE MERTENS

World number 31 Elise Mertens has been enduring a below-par season overall by her lofty standards but the Belgian is a consistent performer at Grand Slams, with Friday’s shock victory over former champion Angelique Kerber taking her to the round of 16 at a major for a 12th time – and for a fourth major in a row. The 26-year-old has reached at least the third round of a Grand Slam in each of her last 18 appearances, stretching back to her best showing yet in a semi-final exit at the 2018 Australian Open.

ONS JABEUR

World number two Ons Jabeur looks increasingly like the favourite for the Wimbledon title after reaching the round of 16 without dropping a set, especially as her main rival Iga Swiatek continues to struggle. The 27-year-old owns three WTA titles and two on grass after claiming her first at the Birmingham Classic last summer and her third at the Berlin Open last month, with her second coming in May at the Madrid Masters. Jabeur reached the quarter-finals here last season before defeat to Aryna Sabalenka, her best run to date at a Grand Slam.

THE PREDICTION

Elise Mertens is a different player at Grand Slams and her victory over one of the best on grass around in Angelique Kerber on Friday makes this a tougher call than it might have been. The Belgian also leads Ons Jabeur 1-0 in their head-to-head after beating the Tunisian in straight sets in the third round of last season’s US Open. This was due to be a tough draw for Jabeur whomever she faced from Kerber and Mertens but the third seed has not put a foot wrong yet at SW19 and she is yet to be beaten on grass this season. An outright pick for the 27-year-old seems a reasonable risk, with Mertens losing at this stage of her last three majors, but you could be forgiven for taking her to win at least a set and leaving the winner up to chance.
