THE LOWDOWN

World number 32 Elise Mertens is an uber-consistent force at Grand Slams, with her run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month her 12th-straight major in which she has reached at least the third round. The former world number 12 reached back-to-back quarter-finals here in 2019 and 2020, setting her best Grand Slam result a year before at the Australian Open with a semi-final exit to eventual champion Caroline Wozniacki. World number 42 Irina-Camelia Begu recently claimed the fifth WTA title of her career at the Palermo Ladies Open on her favoured clay but the Romanian is a tough competitor on hardcourts too. 32-year-old Begu has reached the round of 16 at both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, twice in fact in 2016 and this season, but she has struggled in New York.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a proper battle on Tuesday between two gritty players but Elise Mertens has had the upper hand in their meetings so far as she leads Begu 3-0 in their head-to-head, including a straight-sets win in the second round of the Australian Open this season. Begu would probably be the favourite on clay these days but Mertens has an excellent pedigree at this level and on this surface that says she can be backed to come through the outright winner.
