THE PREDICTION

Both world number 33 Elise Mertens and number 35 Caroline Garcia enjoyed impressive top 20 wins on Wednesday, Mertens ousting former world number one in straight sets and Garcia taking out the fourth seed Maria Sakkari in three. Former world number four Garcia has been enjoying one of the best periods of form in her erratic career over the last few months, adding two more titles to her now total of nine with victories at the Bad Homburg Open and Poland Open. Mertens’ victory over in-form Pliskova comes as more of a surprise after struggling in the singles for much of 2022 but the 26-year-old has plenty of time left to re-join the top 20 as a former world number 12. The Belgian has won each of their last two meetings to trail Garcia by just one win in a 3-2 head-to-head record but the pair are finely-poised at 2-2 on hardcourts. Garcia’s battle with Sakkari should bolster her resolve but these conditions probably suit Mertens a little better, so backing the Frenchwoman to win at least a set looks the sensible way to lean here.
