THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Eline Svitolina was ranked outside the top 500 on tour three weeks ago but she suddenly found her feet, ahead of schedule, at the Strasbourg Open to claim her 17th WTA title. The Ukrainian has now moved back inside the top 80 in the live WTA rankings after a truly remarkable run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros, with her best performance yet coming in straight sets over ninth seed Daria Kasatkina on Sunday. An eight-match winning streak is a serious force for any player to stop but world number two Aryna Sabalenka put in an incredible display late on Sunday with a straight-sets result over Sloane Stephens in which she looked unplayable early-on. The 24-year-old will have to play the villain of the piece here as a Belarussian facing Ukraine’s favoured star, particularly as Svitolina is married to home favourite Gael Monfils, but she has so far stood up to that particular test in Paris.

Svitolina beat Sabalenka in their only previous encounter on clay en-route to her 2020 Strasbourg title but the pair share a finely-poised head-to-head at 1-1 with both encounters going to three sets. Sabalenka is a much better player than their last match, though, and despite Svitolina’s feelgood story the second seed looks set to be Iga Swiatek’s foe in the final on Saturday. Back Sabalenka to win outright with too much tenacity for practically anyone else in the draw right now.
