THE LOWDOWN
Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina should be ranked well inside the top 10 on the WTA tour but with points controversially denied at SW19 the Kazakh is a huge anomaly seeded inside the 20s. That could play to the 23-year-old’s advantage here in New York if she, or someone else, takes out the top seed in her quarter to open up a route to the semi-finals and she should be considered a genuine title contender here with so much less attention on her than usual incoming champions. Rybakina has never made it past the third round at either hardcourt Grand Slam but anything less than the quarter-finals would be a disappointment here.
THE PREDICTION
Rybakina looks to have a kind enough draw in the earlier rounds, starting with a relatively easy opener against qualifier Clara Burel. The world number 132 has struggled to stay on the main tour this season and she has lost in the first round of her last four Grand Slam appearances, with a run to the third round at Roland-Garros in 2020 by far her best showing so far. Back Rybakina to win in straight sets.
