THE PREDICTION
World number 54 Shuai Zhang came back from a set down to beat qualifier Jana Fett on Tuesday in a fairly choppy start to her Birmingham Classic campaign. The 33-year-old won her third WTA title earlier this year in a similar level of competition at the Lyon Open and her vast experience makes her a serious threat here as a solid all-courter. World number 24 Elena-Gabriela Ruse won her first title last season on her favoured clay at the Hamburg Open. The 24-year-old overcame Qiang Wang in two tight tiebreaks, the second going to 14-12, in an impressive first tour win on grass since reaching the Nottingham Open quarter-finals back in 2019. Given their opening results this looks a really tight call but Shuai Zhang won their only previous encounter in straight sets at the 2018 Prague Open on clay and backing her to take at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors seems a suitably cautious move.
