24-year-old Elena-Gabriela Ruse won her first WTA title last season at the Hamburg Open and then finished runner-up to Danielle Collins a week later at the Palermo Open, both on clay. The Romanian will be a tough opponent for 31st seed Elise Mertens here in their first meeting on tour, particularly as Mertens has struggled with consistent form this season. The 26-year-old reached the round of 16 here back in 2018 but her best showings have come at the Australian Open and US Open on her favoured hardcourts. Mertens has won the Women’s Doubles titles at each of the other three Grand Slams, suggesting Roland-Garros is perhaps a weakness that Ruse can exploit here. A fit and firing Mertens should be coming through this first encounter but taking the Romanian to win at least a set here could be the shrewd move in leaving a winner up to chance.
