World number 12 Coco Gauff got a promising US Open campaign underway in comprehensive fashion with a straight-sets victory over Leolia Jeanjean. Remarkably, world number 101 Elena-Gabriela Ruse had surgery on her hand earlier this month and she not only returned ahead of schedule but beat in-form Daria Saville from a set down on Monday. The Romanian is at her best on clay, on which she won her maiden WTA title last season at the Hamburg Open, but she lost to Coco Gauff in three sets in their first meeting just two months ago at Wimbledon and it is likelier to come a little easier to the American with the home crowd fully behind her.
