A run like this has been coming from world number 45 Ekaterina Alexandrova as the Russian beat in-form Amanda Anisimova in straight sets on Wednesday to reach her second semi-final on clay within a month. The 27-year-old lost to eventual champion Belinda Bencic at this stage of the Charleston Open this time last month and she took Anett Kontaveit all the way before losing out at the Stuttgart Open two weeks ago. Alexandrova won her only WTA title at the 2020 Shenzhen Open and more recently reached the final of the Kremlin Cup last season.

World number 10 Ons Jabeur put in one of the performances of her career on Wednesday to beat two-time Madrid Open champion Simona Halep in straight sets, breaking the Romanian’s serve four times. The 27-year-old won her first WTA title at the Birmingham Classic last season on grass but her game is improving all the time across surfaces and she looks a serious title contender now as the highest remaining seed. Jabeur just missed out on becoming the first Arab to qualify for the year-end WTA Finals last year but a Masters title will go a long way to securing that on her second attempt.
THE PREDICTION
There is pretty handy evidence to suggest that Ekaterina Alexandrova is the favourite to come through this semi-final clash with Ons Jabeur as she leads their tour-level meetings 4-1. The Russian has won each of their last four meetings from the 2017 Shenzhen Open through to the Kremlin Cup late last season, where Jabeur was forced to retire from the second set, and yet the Tunisian’s performance against Simona Halep makes her look the tournament favourite here in Madrid. Alexandrova has won all three of their meetings on clay including a Challenger event in 2017 to further suggest this match is going against what some may consider the grain. Backing Alexandrova to win at least a set looks the sensible compromise here, leaving the winner of this likely thriller up to chance.
