THE PREDICTION
This is a high-quality first round clash between world number 12 Jelena Ostapenko and number 45 Ekaterina Alexandrova and three sets seems a likely result no matter the outcome. 24-year-old Ostapenko won the fifth WTA title of her career back in February with a stunning campaign at the Dubai Tennis Championships but she is at home on the clay, on which she famously won Roland-Garros in 2017. The Latvian is riding a three-match losing streak from the semi-finals of the Qatar Open but she is likely to take to the clay like a duck to water after a few rounds on the surface and Alexandrova looks the fair underdog here. 27-year-old Alexandrova will have some practice in her legs, though, after coming through well as the top seed in qualifying and she took Anett Kontaveit to three sets at the Stuttgart Open last week to back-up an incredible run to the semi-finals of the Charleston Open where she lost to eventual champion Belinda Bencic.
Given her form, backing Alexandrova to win at least a set looks the shrewd move here even if she ends up losing. The sensible concession would be taking Ostapenko to take at least one, though.
