World number 30 Ekaterina Alexandrova put in an assured performance to beat Anhelina Kalinina on Thursday after coming back from a set down to beat Dayana Yastremska in the first round. The 27-year-old is at her best on a hardcourt, on which she won her only WTA title to date at the 2020 Shenzhen Open, but she faces a big opportunity in ‘s-Hertogenbosch this week if she can get past the sudden form of Caty McNally. 20-year-old McNally qualified well this week but back-to-back straight-set victories over the resurgent Daria Saville and fourth seed Tamara Zidansek put her in contention here as a very dark horse. The American beat Alexandrova in three sets in their only previous meeting at the 2020 US Open to make this a really tough call. Back Alexandrova to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
