World number 92 Donna Vekic is yet to drop a set this week in Birmingham, taking out Americans Coco Vandeweghe and Caty McNally in a welcome return to form. The 25-year-old former world number 19 won the second of her three WTA titles on grass at the 2017 Nottingham Open and she reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon back in 2018 – in fact she has done so at all four Grand Slams before a severe dropping away over the last few years. World number 36 Sorana Cirstea has, in contrast, enjoyed something of a renaissance over the last 12 months at 32 years old and up until recently she was close to breaking her career-high ranking of 21st. The Romanian conceded just two games to Aleksandra Krunic on Wednesday and impressively ousted Shelby Rogers in three sets in the first round to make this a difficult call.
Vekic beat Cirstea in their only previous meeting on this surface nine years ago at this very stage of the Birmingham Classic but Cirstea is currently the more dependable performer. Back the Romanian to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance.
