World number 22 Karolina Pliskova beat Caroline Dolehide in straight sets on Tuesday to get her San Diego Open campaign underway and to put her shock defeat to Alycia Parks in Ostrava last week away. The 30-year-old former world number one has struggled to find her best tennis since an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the US Open was ended by Aryna Sabalenka but she can often fluctuate after an arduous campaign. That leaves the door slightly ajar for world number 77 Donna Vekic, who upset a currently very brittle Maria Sakkari in straight sets on Tuesday. Former world number 19 Vekic qualified well this weekend to make it three wins in a row in San Diego and that momentum could prove key here if Pliskova is not fully focused. Pliskova commands their head-to-head record 6-0 at tour-level, with their most recent match going to three sets at last season’s Canada Masters. Given that convincing record, back Pliskova to edge things outright here. There is, however, scope to back the Czech to take this in three or to back Vekic to win at least a set – as she has in three of their six meetings.
