THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating fifth encounter between two former world number threes in Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem, with the Austrian defending a 100% record at 4-0 so far in their head-to-head. The 29-year-old recently reached a Challenger final in Rennes before losing to Hubert Hurkacz at the Moselle Open last week and a comeback victory over Laslo Djere on Monday all suggests he is finding his strength again slowly but surely on tour. World number 16 Cilic received a bye to the round of 16 in Tel Aviv as the second seed here and he looks good for a first win over Thiem if he can find his recent level from the US Open, where he took eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz to five sets in defeat. The Croat was in searing form this summer and it would be a surprise to see him end 2022 without a title, with this week’s 250 in Israel an excellent opportunity. Thiem’s record is a concern in backing Cilic outright here but the 33-year-old should be able to edge this.
