Former world number four Dominic Thiem has played out an odd campaign so far at Winston-Salem, coming back from a set and match points down to beat J.J. Wolf on Monday before Grigor Dimitrov retired from their second round match having handed Thiem a first-set bagel on Tuesday. 28-year-old Thiem is, essentially, about to defend his US Open title from 2020 next week after missing last season through injury and he needs as many matches as he can get ahead of New York if he is to in a first five-setter since the 2021 Australian Open. This looks a really tricky draw for the Austrian against 20-year-old Jack Draper, who overcame Fabio Fognini in three sets on Tuesday in a match he largely controlled. Draper will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 52nd no matter the outcome here but backing the Brit to win at least a set as the just-about likelier victor in this form seems reasonable. Particularly as Thiem has dropped a set in each of his last four matches.
