Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz is coming off a disappointing second round exit to Ilya Ivashka at the US Open earlier this month but the Pole is well-versed in blowing hot and cold. The world number 10 lost his first ATP tour final last month at the Canada Masters, from a set up against Pablo Carreno Busta, and he has won just one match since. This could be a proper thriller if former world number four Dominic Thiem can take his momentum from last week’s Rennes Challenger final with him. The 29-year-old lost to Ugo Humbert in the final last Sunday but overall enjoyed a positive week in similar conditions to the Moselle Open and he beat Richard Gasquet in straight sets on Tuesday to suggest he is in the mood. Trying to predict which version of Hurkacz arrives at any tournament is very difficult but the Pole leads Thiem 2-0 in their head-to-head record, both of which came before the Austrian was forced off the tour for a year through injury. Back Hurkacz to win outright, or at least a set inside an accumulator.
