Former world number three Dominic Thiem handed Michael Geerts a second-set bagel late on Wednesday night in a pretty mis-matched opener. The Austrian is looking better and better as he continues to search for his best game since returning to the tour earlier this season, with a semi-final exit to eventual champion Andrey Rublev at the Gijon Open last week impressive fare. Thiem beat Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals last week in their first tour meeting and a quick rematch is likely to favour the experienced Austrian over the Argentine here. 24-year-old Cerundolo has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour but he has struggled to beat the better players on tour since the end of the clay season, where he won his maiden ATP title in Bastad. The world number 28 came back from a set down to Marc-Andrea Huesler on Wednesday but backing Thiem to reach the quarter-finals with an outright win looks the sensible call.
