22-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 31st on Monday after another excellent effort at the Madrid Open was ended by Rafael Nadal. The Serb has been one of the form players on tour this season after finally coming back into the kind of level that saw him touted as Serbia’s next-best thing after Novak Djokovic, with five-consecutive quarter-finals or above reached over the last few months until last week’s defeat to Nadal. 29-year-old Diego Schwartzman was below par in a straight-sets defeat to Grigor Dimitrov at the same stage in Madrid last week but back at lower altitude the Argentine will be revelling in another chance at the Rome Masters after reaching the final here in 2020. Novak Djokovic bested the Argentine that day after Schwartzman had ousted the second seed Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals but this is a seriously tough opening draw. Kecmanovic is the man in better overall form and in a match likely to see three sets backing the Serb to win at least one of them is sensible.
