World number 16 Diego Schwartzman set his best Grand Slam showing in 2020 with a run to the semi-finals at Roland-Garros ended by the eventual champion Rafael Nadal. The 30-year-old went on to set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth that season to qualify for the ATP Finals for a first time. Schwartzman has twice reached the quarter-finals here in New York, losing to Pablo Carreno Busta in 2017 and, once again, the eventual champion Nadal in 2019. Former world number eight Jack Sock reached the third round at Wimbledon last month but he has struggled to impose himself in singles draws on tour this season. The American has been working hard in the doubles, though, winning the Citi Open earlier this month alongside Nick Kyrgios as well as Indian Wells with John Isner back in March.
THE PREDICTION
This should be an entertaining clash of styles between the diminutive but fierce Diego Schwartzman and hard-hitting Jack Sock. 29-year-old Sock won their only previous encounter in his pomp at the Italian Open back in 2017 but he may struggle to outlast the Argentine over five sets. The sensible option looks like taking Schwartzman to win outright but there is certainly some scope for a five setter here, with the 30-year-old no stranger to a battle.
