22nd-seed Frances Tiafoe looks in great shape so far at the US Open with two straight-set victories over Marcos Giron and Jason Kubler. The 24-year-old reached the round of 16 here last season by stunning Andrey Rublev in the third round before a four-set defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime and he emulated that run at Wimbledon in July before a gut-wrenching five-set defeat to David Goffin. World number 16 Diego Schwartzman also overcame an Aussie in three tight sets on Thursday, beating Alexei Poyprin via two tiebreaks after surviving a tough opener with Jack Sock. The popular Argentine has twice reached the quarter-finals in New York, losing to Pablo Carreno Busta in 2017 and Rafael Nadal in 2019, and he leads this head-to-head record 2-1 after taking the first two of three meetings last season on clay in Barcelona and on a hardcourt at the Cincinnati Open. Tiafoe beat Schwartzman most recently on his way to the Vienna Open final late last season and he has won at least a set in each of their three matches so far.
This could be a proper thriller on Saturday and the big occasions suit both players, although Tiafoe will attract most of the support as an in-form American. Back him to win at least two sets and leave the winner up to chance.
