THE LOWDOWN

DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN

World number 14 Diego Schwartzman has lost back-to-back finals on his favoured clay surface, to Casper Ruud at the Buenos Aires Open and Carlos Alcaraz at the Rio Open last time out. The Argentine started the season well with a career-best victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Cup to continue some excellent form from late last season that included a run to the quarter-finals here in October.

EMIL RUUSUVUORI

World number 70 Emil Ruusuvuori beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets on Friday to reach the second round of Indian Wells in successive seasons. The 22-year-old grabbed the result of his career so far this time last season when he stunned Alexander Zverev at the Miami Open before losing to eventual runner-up Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.

THE PREDICTION

This is an intriguing first meeting between Diego Schwartzman and Emil Ruusuvuori. Finland’s Ruusuvuori is at his best on a hardcourt but he is yet to develop a reliable killer instinct, as a five-set defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round of the Australian Open suggests. The slow-ish hardcourts of Indian Wells played into Schwartzman’s hands last season before he was outmanoeuvred by eventual champion Cam Norrie in the quarter-finals and backing the Argentine to win outright looks the sensible move here.
