World number 15 Diego Schwartzman came back from a set down to oust a tough foe in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday, snapping an unwelcome and poor two-set losing streak. The 29-year-old has struggled over the summer on grass, his weakest surface, but more concerningly on his favoured clay and a clutch victory over ADF will do him the world of good in Montreal. World number 43 Albert Ramos-Vinolas played well to beat David Goffin in straight sets on Tuesday, in keeping with recent strong form. The 34-year-old is also at his best on the clay, with back-to-back semi-finals reached on the surface last month, and this will be an intriguing first match on a hardcourt between two players who have met six times on their favoured surface. Schwartzman leads Ramos-Vinolas 5-1 after the Spaniard finally claimed a win in their most recent match at last season’s Cordoba Open. The Argentine is by far the more comfortable fighter on a hardcourt, though, and his record suggests he can be backed to come through outright here.
