THE PREDICTION
World number two Barbora Krejcikova will play her first match on tour since February after suffering an injury at the Qatar Open. The defending Roland-Garros champion was already a serial Doubles winner on tour before her singles game clicked into gear last season. The Czech won her first WTA title at the Strasbourg Open and took that momentum straight to Paris with a stunning campaign including wins over Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari before a three-set victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The 26-year-old also won the Women’s Doubles titles alongside Katerina Siniakova, with whom she also won the Tokyo Olympic Games and WTA Finals last season as well as this season’s Australian Open.
19-year-old Diane Parry faces a huge opportunity here, though, to knock out the defending champion in this intriguing first round clash. The Frenchwoman is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 96th after some decent results on the Challenger circuit over the last year and she could well take the first set at least against the rusty second seed. Backing Krejcikova to win outright is the sensible concession here but more sensible still is holding off on this one until the Czech shows us where her level is at.
