World number 22 Denis Shapovalov responded well to his defeat to Yoshihito Nishioka in the Korea Open final last weekend with a straight-sets victory over Steve Johnson in Tokyo on Wednesday. The 23-year-old often fares well towards the end of the ATP season, with his sole title coming from the late Stockholm Open back in 2019 and a total of four out of his five career tour finals coming after the US Open. 23-year-old Rio Noguchi bumped his world ranking up by around 75 places after beating Ramkumar Ramanathan on Wednesday to set a new career-high at around 215th no matter the outcome here. The qualifier will be a spirited home underdog for the Tokyo crowds to support but it would be a surprise to see anything other than a Shapovalov win in two.
