THE PREDICTION

World number 22 Denis Shapovalov desperately needs a strong outing here in Cincinnati if he is to find any form in time to challenge at the US Open. The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season whilst briefly touching his very high ceiling but the Canadian has stuttered and faltered practically ever since, with occasional deep runs including a an impressive route to the Australian Open quarter-finals. In fact this could be an electrifying first round match up between two players enduring similar seasons as world number 19 Grigor Dimitrov comes into Cincinnati with little form to speak of. The Bulgarian won his only Masters title here in 2017 on his way to a career-high world number three and the ATP Finals crown later that year but he has since failed to add to his career total of eight ATP titles. Dimitrov leads their head-to-head record 2-1, 2-0 on hardcourts, and Shapovalov brings a three-match losing streak into the first round but the Canadian should always be treated with caution. Back Dimitrov to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance, with this match between two of the most unpredictable players on tour best left well away from any accumulators.
