THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Andrey Rublev blasted past Soonwoo Kwon on Thursday in an altogether more assured performance than his five-set opener with Laslo Djere. The 24-year-old is still reaching for his notorious, most ruthless tennis we first saw in 2020 but he has still managed to win three ATP titles this year in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade. World number 23 Denis Shapovalov is also reaching for his best tennis, with a run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year initially looking like a turning point, but he came as close as anyone to ending Rafael Nadal’s run at the Australian Open in a quarter-final five-set defeat. The 23-year-old has won back-to-back matches in successive tournaments for the first time since Melbourne, though, after a four-set victory over Roberto Carballes Baena on Thursday. It took Daniil Medvedev to oust him from the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago and at his best he should be able to overpower this current version of Rublev but this looks a proper head-scratcher with their head-to-head record at 2-2.
Shapovalov has won both of their outdoor hardcourt matches whilst Rublev has won both indoors, including their most recent at the 2020 St. Petersburg Open. The Russian is the more dependable but five sets gives Shapovalov time to peak and trough. Back the Canadian to win at least two sets here or take at least a tiebreak in the match to leave the result filly up to chance.
