THE LOWDOWN
20-year-old Lorenzo Musetti broke the top 30 on tour for a first time this month after stunning Carlos Alcaraz in the Hamburg Open final to win his maiden ATP title. The Italian has lost in the first round of the first three Grand Slams this season, although he took a tough draw in Stefanos Tsitsipas to five sets at Roland-Garros where he set his best showing at this level by far last season in a five-set defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Musetti reached the second round on his debut here last season before defeat to Reilly Opelka. Former world number 10 David Goffin has been in erratic form all season long. The 31-year-old reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last month before a five-set defeat to Cam Norrie and that effort looks to have sapped the energy from his last few outings. Goffin won the sixth ATP title of his career back in April at the Marrakech Open.
THE PREDICTION
This is one of the better candidates for a five-set epic in the first round of the US Open with both Lorenzo Musetti and David Goffin enduring some marathon matches this season. Musetti won their first encounter at Roland-Garros last season, when Goffin was in one his lower recent ebbs, but a hardcourt will level the playing field in this second meeting and sets are likely for both. Given his recent exploits at Wimbledon, and that Musetti has often struggled to stay in matches away from the clay, back Goffin to win at least two sets here as the likelier of two capable victors.
