World number 19 Diego Schwartzman received a bye to round of 16 at the European Open as the third seed in Antwerp but the Argentine could probably have done with a kinder first round opener in his current form. The 30-year-old finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner here last season as he enjoyed some late form on tour but he has struggled to properly impose himself on a tournament since a solid run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros was ended by Novak Djokovic. World number 58 David Goffin has transformed from one of the more dependable top players on tour a few seasons ago to a man capable of anything, with a run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon back in July and a victory over world number one Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month as good as recent defeats to Adrian Mannarino and Gilles Simon were poor. Goffin needed three tight sets to see off 17-year-odl Gilles Arnaud Bailly on Tuesday to suggest he is far from the pace required and this looks a definite match to exclude from an accumulator between two players seeking confidence.
Goffin leads Schwartzman 4-1 in their head-to-head record but Schwartzman’s only win against the Belgian came here in Antwerp back in 2016. Back the Argentine to earn at least a set here, as he has done in three of their five meetings.
