World number 12 Daria Kasatkina stunned the new Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, from a set down on Monday to get a promising campaign underway. The 25-year-old last won over a month ago at the Bad Homburg Open as the Russian/Belarussian ban kept her from what could have been a deep run at Wimbledon and she should be considered a title contender in San Jose as a player with great consistency across all three surfaces. World number 316 Taylor Townsend qualified well this week to make the main draw and she won her first tour-level match since coming back from a long injury with a straight-sets result over Storm Sanders. The 26-year-old has a high ceiling and plenty of time to get back to, and potentially break, her career-high WTA world ranking of 61st but this looks a tough draw early on. Kasatkina has needed considerable foes to oust her from most of her recent tournaments and the Russian can be backed to take this in two, perhaps outright inside an accumulator.
