THE PREDICTION
World number 23 Daria Kasatkina stunned Maria Sakkari in the second round of the Madrid Open last week before losing in three sets to Sara Sorribes Tormo. The 25-year-old is at her best on clay, on which she won her first WTA title at the Charleston Open back in 2017, but so is her tough opening opponent Tamara Zidansek. World number 24 Zidansek produced a stunning run to the semi-finals of the last season’s Roland-Garros before losing to eventual runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets and she took that form into a first WTA title at the Lausanne Ladies Open. The 24-year-old has struggled to impose herself on the clay so far this swing but she won the only previous meeting with Kasatkina at the 2018 Moscow Open on this surface in three sets and this could come down to the wire once again. Based on her recent form in Madrid, Kasatkina looks the best player to back with at least a set but on overall ability on this surface Zidansek feels like the dark horse.
