THE PREDICTION

World number four Paula Badosa put in one of the performances of her season with a straight-sets victory over Coco Gauff on Friday. The 24-year-old is perhaps at her best on clay but her most impressive runs have mostly come on hardcourts, especially at last season’s Indian Wells where she won her second of three WTA titles. Her third came at the Sydney Tennis Classic at the start of the season, where she met and beat Daria Kasatkina for the first time, although Kasatkina returned the favour at the Italian Open back in May to level things nicely. In-form world number 12 Kasatkina came back from a set down to beat a misfiring Aryna Sabalenka on Friday and she stunned recent Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on Tuesday in what has been an impressive campaign in San Jose so far. Expect long rallies in this potential thriller with the winner hard to call. Badosa’s result over Gauff is the most impressive of the week, considering she in turn had taken out Naomi Osaka, but head versus heart leans towards baseline-battler Kasatkina the longer this match continues. Back Kasatkina to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
