THE LOWDOWN
DARIA KASATKINA
World number 23 Daria Kasatkina came back from a set down to beat Leylah Fernandez on Wednesday to back up an excellent result over Tamara Zidansek in the first round. The 25-year-old burst onto the scene early in her career with her first of four WTA titles won at the Charleston Open in 2017, on clay, and she set a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th a year later after reaching back-to-back quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.
PAULA BADOSA
World number three Paula Badosa will return to number two on Monday if she reaches the semi-finals of the Italian Open and that would suit her favourably heading into Roland-Garros as the likely second seed there. The 24-year-old made short work of Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Wednesday and she will be eager to impose herself on this tournament after losing heavily to Simona Halep at this stage of the Madrid Masters last week. Badosa won her first Masters title at Indian Wells last season and she finished runner-up at the WTA Finals on her debut.
THE PREDICTION
Paula Badosa beat Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Sydney Tennis Classic back in January on her way to the title but both players are better on clay and this could come a little closer. Kasatkina has taken out two tough foes so far in Rome and she is always a thorn in the side of any player she faces, especially on her favoured clay. However, Badosa has needed the highest quality to oust her for most of the season and backing the second seed to win outright here seems a reasonable move.
