THE PREDICTION
World number eight Daria Kasatkina has struggled with her form in 2023 with erratic peaks and troughs so far but she opened her Qatar account solidly enough with a straight-sets victory over Rebecca Marino. The 25-year-old added two more WTA titles to her career-total of six last season on hardcourts and she should still be considered the slightest of favourites in this first meeting with Beatriz Haddad-Maia despite her current form. 26-year-old Haddad-Maia set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th this week after reaching the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open last week, losing to eventual champion Belinda Bencic. The Brazilian looks well capable of breaking the top 10 on tour if she can maintain her current intensity, which saw her beat Paula Badosa in straight sets on Tuesday to avenge a defeat to the Spaniard last month in Adelaide. This is one of the tighter matches to call of the day. Perhaps the best way to avoid picking a result is taking Haddad-Maia to earn at least a set here to guard against a potential fightback from Kasatkina but three sets could be the more worthwhile pick.
