This could be Serena Williams’ last ever match as professional tennis player after she announced that she would be moving away from the sport after the US Open. The former world number one and 23-time Grand Slam champion won her first major title here back in 1999 as an 18-year-old and she went on to win a further five in New York, with seven each at Wimbledon and the Australian Open as well as three claimed from Roland-Garros.
Williams has featured in six of the last 11 US Open finals, winning three-straight from 2012 to 2014 and losing in 2011 as well as back-to-back to Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu in 2018 and 2019, respectively. There is little point speculating on how far the world’s greatest ever tennis player can go on this swansong but her Open Era record is surely unbreakable and the legacy she has brought to tennis, to sport, to the world, legendary.
THE PREDICTION
The draw gods have smiled on Williams here with a first round fixture against world number 80 Danka Kovinic, who takes a four-match losing streak into the US Open since a third round exit at Roland-Garros to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. The Montenegrin also reached the third round at the Australian Open this year to set her best Grand Slam showing and the occasion will likely bring her out of this current slump with the whole world watching. It is hard to see Serena Williams waste this opportunity, though, and backing her to win outright looks a reasonable pick.
