The Dutchman will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 140th no matter what happens here against the Libema Open top seed but with the likes of Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz in his rear-view he will do well to soak in the occasion as a home underdog set to be backed to the hilt in his first tour final. 26-year-old Daniil Medvedev will be crowned world number one on Monday and the Russian is unlikely to bow under the same pressure as his fellow top 20 players. Medvedev beat an in-form Adrian Mannarino on Saturday to reach the final without dropping a set and only Van Rijthoven’s remarkable story makes taking the Russian to win in two seem too risky here. Back Medvedev to win the day but this should be a joyous occasion for the home fans either way and it will be fascinating to see what Van Rijthoven can do from here.
