THE PREDICTION

World number one Daniil Medvedev was the Cincinnati Open champion in 2019 and he is playing like it so far this campaign with back-to-back straight-set results over Botic van de Zandschulp and Denis Shapovalov. The lack of Novak Djokovic here, and the early exits by Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios, leaves the draw fairly open for the Russian, who has probably been the best player on the North American hardcourt circuit over the course of the last three seasons. This will be a fascinating first meeting with world number 13 Taylor Fritz, though, who ousted an out-of-sorts Kyrgios on Wednesday before a three-set comeback victory over Andrey Rublev. The 24-year-old won Indian Wells back in March and runs to the round of 16 at the Australian Open and quarter-final at Wimbledon suggest he could be about to do something special at the US Open. Beating the current US Open champion would be a huge statement of intent and given his current form three sets seem likelier than two here. Backing Medvedev to win outright remains the sensible option but a one-off punt on Fritz to cause a significant upset could prove valuable.
