World number one Daniil Medvedev is the defending US Open champion after a ruthless campaign last season ended with a straight-sets dismissal of an exhausted Novak Djokovic. The 26-year-old was stunned in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open by Stefanos Tsitsipas last time out for unexpected exits in each of his last two tournaments, losing to Nick Kyrgios before that in Montreal, but his only serious predator in these conditions, and over five sets, is a fit and firing Rafael Nadal, who beat him in five in the Australian Open final back in January.
THE PREDICTION
World number 110 Stefan Kozlov last won a tour-level match at the Mexican Open way back in February, where he stunned Grigor Dimitrov in a three-set thriller. Since then the 24-year-old has been well below what he is capable of, struggling even at Challenger level, and this looks set to be a really tough day for the American. Medvedev will be keen to get business done as quickly as possible to make a statement defending his title and backing him to win in straight sets here, with less than 27.5 games in the match, looks a reasonable option here.
