THE LOWDOWN

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

World number one Daniil Medvedev is the defending US Open champion after beating Novak Djokovic in three sets here last season. The 26-year-old is yet to drop a set on his way to the second week for a second-successive season, beating Stefan Kozlov, Arthur Rinderknech and Yibing Wu in relative comfort. Medvedev beat Nick Kyrgios in four sets on his way to the Australian Open final this January and he reached his first Grand Slam final here in 2019, on both occasions losing to Rafael Nadal in five sets.

NICK KYRGIOS

World number 25 Nick Kyrgios beat J.J. Wolf in straight sets on Friday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open for the first time. The 27-year-old reached a first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon back in July before defeat in four sets to Novak Djokovic and he more recently won the seventh ATP title of his career at the Citi Open. Kyrgios leads Daniil Medvedev 3-1 in their head-to-head record after stunning the Russian in three sets at the Canada Masters last month, with his second victory coming in the 2019 Citi Open final.

THE PREDICTION

In many ways it is a shame to have this blockbuster come so soon at the US Open but with the departure of Serena Williams still raw perhaps the tournament could do with a thrilling distraction. Nick Kyrgios’s excellent record over Daniil Medvedev makes for a fascinating battle here, with the Russian not quite up to speed in their previous meeting and a four-set tussle at Melbourne before that. Like at the Australian Open, Medvedev will know he has a better chance at winning the match the longer it takes and he should attract more support than he did against the Aussie in his homeland, with the crowd likely to cheer on whichever player needs some help towards a five-setter. As the defending champion, and with five sets of time to frustrate Nick Kyrgios into a meltdown, back Medvedev to pass this huge test. The winner of this match should reach the US Open final, if not win it.
