World number four Daniil Medvedev is chasing one of the three remaining ATP Finals places and he looks in a solid position to do so as the current next in line in the race. The 26-year-old beat Nikoloz Basilashvili comfortably on Wednesday to get his Vienna campaign underway, with a semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Astana Open his previous match a good marker for his current level. This should be a fascinating battle on Thursday though as former world number three Dominic Thiem’s resurgence continues. The 29-year-old beat Tommy Paul from a set down on Tuesday in front of rapturous home support and the Austrian has lost to an eventual finalist in each of his last three tournaments. Thiem leads Medvedev 3-2 in their head-to-head but the pair have not met on tour since the 2020 ATP Finals, where Medvedev beat the Austrian to win. This promises to be a proper thriller with plenty at stake but backing Medvedev to earn at least a set looks the sensible move here considering Thiem is not yet back to his full potential.
