THE PREDICTION

World number one Daniil Medvedev lost from a set up to Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 at the Canada Masters last week, as defending champion, despite playing some great tennis. The defeat should concern the Russian ahead of his defence of the US Open later this month but five sets should suit him over much of the field, especially as Novak Djokovic looks set to miss out, and he remains one of the favourites here in Cincinnati as a former champion in 2019. 26-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp was the only player to take a set from Medvedev at the US Open last season and the Dutchman has gone from strength to strength since that career-best run to the quarter-finals. Van de Zandschulp started Cincinnati at a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th and beat in-form Maxime Cressy in three sets to suggest he will not be beaten easily here, although he trails Medvedev 2-0 in their head-to-head record. Three sets is a distinct possibility here, especially after Medvedev’s tough defeat last week, so back the world number one to win outright.
